For all those who have been wondering exactly where I am and what it's like here, this is a bit of background. Right now I live and study in the Kartause, a 675+ year old Carthusian monastery that now houses Franciscan University's Gaming Program. Gaming is the name of the local town in Austria, not a reference to games. Austria is in Europe, and is sadly free of Kangaroos.
It would be absurd to try to describe how beautiful the local scenery is, so I'll try to post as many pictures as I can. Now, From all the stories of the Kartause being in the Alps, I imagined it being in the middle of nowhere, up some steep hill or mountain. It's true that the closest McDonald's is 45 minutes away, but we're not entirely cut off from civilization here. As you can see below, we're just a short 10-15 minute walk from town. Right about where it says "Im Markt" is the local grocery store (the Spar), the bar (Urs), the parish Church, a toy store, a butcher, a tobacco store and a few others.
The Kartause is, in fact, nestled up against a pretty serious mountain (though only a hill
by local standards). The following pictures were taken after walking about 15 minutes South
in order to get a wide enough picture of it:
Although the mountains look smoothly rounded at the top, the fog is obscuring much of their height in this picture. Compare with:
This picture is from the suburbs in Gaming, about 5 minutes east of the parish church.
